I use only the highest grade, hand selected solid woods, such as Cherry, Maple, and clear Pine. All cabinet parts have a minimum 1-inch thickness.
I hand match grain patterns in the wood wherever possible, which creates a more "natural" look, something very few manufacturers still do.
When building in pine, IT MUST HAVE NO KNOTS. Pine with knots is a sub-standard grade wood which is not only unsightly, but highly prone to splitting in time. Knotty pine is for building crates, not furniture.
Absolutey no plywood - Many builders claim this but look closely at cabinet backs, drawer bottoms and other "unseen" areas. While these areas may be unseen, they are far from unimportant. Plywood will warp, droop, and chip creating an unsightly piece which will no longer function. All my pieces are crafted from solid wood including tongue and groove beaded backboards and solid 1-inch thick drawer bottoms, not 1/4" plywood, which cannot be overloaded. |
